The Italian illuminator, miniaturist and painter Giulio Clovio was born in Croatia. At 18 years he came to Italy to study art. In 1540 entered the service of cardinal Allessandro Farnese. In 1556 Clovio spent a period in Parma with the cardinal's brother Ottavio, Duke of Parma, and his wife Margaret of Austria, then returned to the cardinal's household in Rome, where he remained up to his death.
